Mattress in a Box vs Traditional Mattress
A mattress in a box is a normal mattress that has been compressed, rolled and packed into a carton about the size of a bar fridge, so a courier can deliver it to your door and you can carry it to the bedroom yourself. A traditional mattress is the same product delivered flat on a truck, usually after you have tried it in a showroom. The mattress inside can be identical. What changes is how it reaches you, what it costs to get there, and what happens if it is wrong.
What is actually different
| Mattress in a box | Traditional showroom mattress | |
|---|---|---|
| How it arrives | Rolled in a carton by courier, carried in by you, expands within hours | Flat on a delivery truck, often with a two person crew and a delivery window |
| Where you try it | In your own bed for a trial period, 120 nights with us | A few minutes lying on it in a showroom, with a shorter or no home trial |
| What you pay for | The mattress, the box and the freight | The mattress, plus the showroom, the sales staff and the retail margin |
| Spring or foam | Both. Pocket spring hybrids roll fine because each spring is wrapped on its own | Both |
| Getting it wrong | Return inside the trial, full refund on the mattress | Depends on the store's change of mind policy, often a restocking fee or exchange only |
| Old mattress | You arrange disposal, or keep it for a spare room | Some stores take it away for a fee |
Does rolling a mattress damage it
No, if it was built to be rolled. Foam and pocket springs both recover from compression because the foam is open cell and the springs sit inside their own fabric pockets. A mattress with a continuous wire spring unit or a rigid border rod cannot be rolled, which is why some traditional designs never appear in a box. Every mattress we sell is built for the box, and the 15 year warranty covers the mattress the same way whether it came rolled or flat.
How long a boxed mattress takes to expand
Most of ours are ready to sleep on the same night. Unbox it on the base, cut the plastic, and let it breathe for a few hours. It reaches its full height within 24 to 72 hours, and any packing smell clears in the same time with a window open. Sleeping on it during that window does no harm.
Which one is cheaper
For the same build, the boxed one. A showroom mattress carries the cost of the floor space, the salesperson's time and the retailer's margin, and none of those make the mattress better. Our Boutique starts at $379 for a single and $599 for a queen because it ships from one warehouse with none of that in the price. The trade off is that you cannot lie on it first, which is what the 120 night trial replaces.
When a traditional mattress is the better choice
If you need a custom size, a very heavy two sided mattress, or you want someone to carry the old one out on the same visit, a local retailer may suit you better. If you are in Melbourne and want it tomorrow, that is not a reason to choose the showroom, because our metro delivery is next business day.
What to check before you buy either
- The trial length and what a return actually costs you, in writing.
- The warranty length and what it covers (sagging depth is the usual test).
- Whether the size is a true Australian standard size, which matters for sheets and frames.
- What is inside: pocket spring hybrid, all foam, or latex, and the firmness stated for it.
- Delivery cost to your postcode, not the metro headline.
Questions people ask
Can I put a mattress in a box on my existing base or slats
Yes, on any flat base, ensemble or slatted frame with slats no more than about 7 cm apart. Wider gaps let the mattress dip between them, which shortens its life and can void a warranty.
Can a mattress in a box go back in the box
No. Compression happens on factory machinery and the mattress will not roll back to that size by hand. If you return one inside the trial, it goes back full size, which is why our return options are collection by courier or selling or disposing of it yourself.
Do mattresses in a box last as long
The same build lasts the same time. Life depends on the foam density, the spring gauge and the base it sits on, not on whether it was rolled for delivery. Ours carry the same 15 year warranty either way.
Is a mattress in a box firm enough for a bad back
Firmness is a build choice, not a delivery choice. Our range runs from medium plush to extra firm, and the back pain guide covers which build suits which back.
