Sorting it out on your own terms

Getting up in the morning under your own steam is a decent part of what keeps you in your own house. Most beds quietly work against you there, and it is fixable without anybody making a fuss about it.

The mechanism

Three things that make getting up harder

The first is height. A standard base plus a mattress often sits lower than the height at which you can simply step off the bed, so instead of standing you are pushing yourself up out of it. A few centimetres decides which of those two it is.

The second is the edge. Most mattresses have nothing reinforcing the perimeter, so at the exact moment you put your weight on your hands and push, the edge gives way underneath you. You are standing up from something that is both too low and moving.

The third is the angle. Coming up from flat on your back uses your stomach and your arms. Starting from sitting upright does not, because the bed has already done that part.

This is an ordinary bed with a motor in it. It is not a medical device, we make no claim about preventing falls, and it is not supplied through any government scheme.

How the bed does it

Two motors and one remote

The base sits where your bed frame sits and your mattress goes on top. One motor lifts the head, another lifts the legs, and the bed holds whatever angle you set for as long as you want it.

Flat

Exactly like an ordinary bed. Nothing about the base stops you sleeping flat when you want to.

Head raised

Lifts the upper body, which keeps the airway more open and means you can sit up without building a wall of pillows.

Zero gravity

Head and knees both raised so weight spreads across the whole bed instead of pressing into the hips and lower back. On the 2.0 and 3.0.

Straight answers

The two questions that actually decide it

Will it look like a hospital bed?

No, and that is deliberate. There are no rails, no beige vinyl and no chrome. It takes your own bedding and sits inside a normal timber bed frame if you have one. Somebody walking into the room would see a bed and think nothing of it.

Who puts it together?

It arrives flat packed and the assembly is essentially screwing the legs on and plugging it in, about twenty minutes for one person with a screwdriver. The delivery driver brings it to your door.

How do I know you are a real business before I spend $1,599?

Mattress Crafters has been an Australian family business selling beds since 1963 and is now in its third generation. Every measurement and specification is published before you spend anything, and if you would rather ask a person first, send us a message and one will answer you properly.

Does the Seniors Card actually work on this?

Yes. Seniors Card holders get ten percent off adjustable bases. Mention it when you order.

Queen base and the mattress built to bend with it, delivered free anywhere in Australia, about twenty minutes to assemble.

A bed reaches a showroom floor through four sets of hands. The factory builds it, an importer brings it in, a wholesaler distributes it and a retailer sells it, and each one adds a margin before it reaches your bedroom. On top of that the retailer recovers the building, the lights, the staff, the commission and the advertising, because the bed is the only thing they have to recover it through.

We buy direct from the factory that builds them, hold them in our own warehouse and send them to your door. One margin instead of four, and no shopfront on top of it. That is the whole difference, and it is why there is no sale price here and no crossed out number that nobody ever paid.

The things worth knowing

Do I need a new bed frame?

No. The base is the frame. It has its own legs and stands where your old bed stood. Most bed heads can stay and the base sits in front of them.

Can I use my existing mattress?

Only if it flexes. Most pocket spring and foam mattresses will, but a stiff mattress fights the base and can be damaged. That is why the kit includes a mattress built to bend with it.

How hard is it to put together?

Twenty to thirty minutes, and the legs are the only real assembly. It arrives ready to plug in.

What is covered by the warranty?

Twelve years on the frame and six years on the moving parts. The mattress carries its own separate warranty listed on the mattress page.

What if I do not get on with it?

The mattress is covered by our 120 night money back guarantee. The base itself is not returnable, so read the size and height details first. The base stays compatible with any flexible mattress in the same size.

Does it make noise at night?

The motors only run while you hold the button. Once it is in position it is silent.
