Our family has been building mattresses in Australia for over 60 years, we sell straight from the factory floor, and the price is the build plus the truck to your door. Don't wait for a sale

You have been trained by mattress retailers to wait for the half price sale, and fair enough too, because the sale never really ends. The trick is that the price gets marked up so it can be marked down, and the "was" price is doing the selling. We do it differently. Where we cut corners and where we never will

Every mattress company cuts corners somewhere. Most of them cut quality and spend the savings on marketing. We think that is exactly backwards, so here is our ledger, in the open.

Corners we cut on purpose

  • No showrooms. A shopfront adds rent, power bills and a salesperson's commission to your price and adds nothing to your sleep.
  • No big advertising budget. No billboards, no celebrities, no podcast ads. It is also why you may not have heard of us.
  • No middlemen. The mattress goes from our factory floor into a box and onto a truck to your door. Nobody clips the ticket in between.
  • No fancy unboxing theatre. The box is plain and strong. The money went into what is inside it.

  • The inside of the mattress. Twice tempered coils, high density foams, CertiPUR-US certified. This is the part you live with for fifteen years.

Under the surface sit hundreds of individual pocket springs in seven zones. The zones under your hips and shoulders push back more firmly because that is where your body carries its weight, and the zones under your head, waist and legs push back more gently. The comfort layer is a high density memory foam that behaves a little like honey and a little like rubber. Where your body presses in, it slowly gives and moulds around you, spreading your weight across a much bigger area so your hips and shoulders stop carrying the load on two small points. And because it absorbs movement instead of bouncing it back, when your partner rolls over at 2am, the wave dies in the foam before it ever reaches your side.

UC Berkeley sleep scientist Matthew Walker puts it plainly: to fall asleep, your core temperature needs to drop by about one degree, and your body sheds that heat through your skin into whatever you are lying on. An old mattress traps that heat against you, which is the 2am doona throw. A well built one lets the heat move through the comfort layers and out through the open coil chamber below, and on our cooler models a gel foam layer helps disperse heat for a cooler sleep feel.

The Pierotti family story

Australian owned and obsessing over bedding for over 60 years

Mattress Crafters begins with Frank Pierotti, who left his flattened corner of Tuscany after the Second World War and worked his way across Australia, first in the Perth mines and then selling cinema advertising in Melbourne, where he met the Scottish girl who became his wife. In 1963 they settled in country New South Wales and opened Caesars, a small furniture and bedding store with the family name above the door and a signwritten delivery truck the whole town came to know.

Frank spent the decades that followed learning what Australians actually need from a bed, because a country that swings from thirty degree nights to frosts in the same season punishes anything built without knowledge. That knowledge passed to his son Paul, who grew up in and around the store, and who eventually took everything the family had learned and built Mattress Crafters with it, so the beds they had spent a lifetime perfecting could reach every Australian address at a factory direct price.

Plenty of mattress brands were invented in a marketing meeting a few years ago. This one was built across three generations of one family, and it still carries their name.

How can I buy a mattress without lying on it first?

Ten minutes on a showroom bed in your good clothes tells you surprisingly little, because your body takes weeks to adjust to a new mattress. That is what the trial is for. Sleep on your mattress for at least 30 nights so your body can adjust, then any time up to night 120 you can send it back for a refund of the mattress price. You pay the freight both ways and we quote it in writing before you commit to anything, because a returned mattress travels full size rather than back in its box. If it is this cheap, what is wrong with it?

Nothing is wrong with it, something is missing from the bill. There is no showroom rent, no commission and no advertising budget inside our price. The build itself uses twice tempered pocket coils and CertiPUR-US certified foams, and we back it for 15 years against manufacturing defects, which is not something anyone does for a mattress they expect to fail.

How does the mattress arrive?

Compressed, rolled and boxed, delivered to your door. You cut the wrap open on the bed base, it expands, and it is ready to sleep on that night. The box fits through doorways and up stairs far more politely than a full size mattress ever could.

How long does delivery take, and what does it cost?

Delivery is free to most Australian addresses, and some remote areas attract a fee, shown at checkout. Dispatch is quick, though right now a few of our most popular models are running behind because of how fast we are growing, and we would rather tell you that here than surprise you after you order.

Which firmness should I pick?

Most of the range is medium firm, which suits most back and side sleepers, with a softer option and a firmer option at either end. The best way to decide is the two minute quiz on this page, because it weighs your build and sleeping position properly instead of guessing.

What does the 15 year warranty actually cover?

Manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for 15 years. It does not cover normal comfort preferences or normal wear, which is what the 120 night trial is for instead.
